Chapitre 5/13

Chapitre 5 / 13 · 5 min de lecture · Bilingue

The Day of Reckoning

Just as Malik reached the gate, a wedding procession blocked his way.

Horns. White ribbons. Motorbikes opening the road.

Klaxons. Rubans blancs. Motos ouvrant la voie.

From a decorated sedan stepped a young man in a three-piece suit, a bouquet in his hand.

The procession displayed money the way one displays a warning: German cars in a row, hired cameras, griots paid to sing a name.

And at the centre of it all, the groom.

Kevin.

Kevin.

Three years had thickened his face and sharpened his suits. But the smile was the same. The smile of a son the city had never refused anything.

Seeing Malik, he paused. Then he burst out laughing.

— Well, well. I had completely forgotten you were getting out today. What timing! Have you come to attend my wedding with Aïcha?

— Ça alors. J’avais complètement oublié que tu sortais aujourd’hui. Quel timing ! Tu viens assister à mon mariage avec Aïcha ?

His eyes shone with mockery.

Ses yeux brillaient de moquerie.

Malik looked at him coldly, then turned away. He had no time to waste on this.

— Don’t leave so fast!

— Ne pars pas si vite !

Kevin cut across his path.

Kevin lui coupa la route.

— No money for a wedding gift? No problem, you are excused. Come anyway. There will be leftovers — eat as much as you want. It is at the N’Kora Palace. If you do not come today, you will never set foot there in your life.

He sniggered and patted Malik’s cheek, two little taps of ownership.

Malik knocked the hand away with one dry flick.

— And you, what is so extraordinary about you? You are marrying what I have already held in my arms.

A cold laugh.

Un rire froid.

In truth, Malik had never even held Aïcha’s hand. But he wanted to see Kevin’s face. And he wanted Aïcha to hear the price of her betrayal.

Kevin went pale and spun toward the villa.

Aïcha stood on the doorstep. She understood in one second and started shouting:

— Nonsense! He is lying! Malik, what are you saying? You never laid a finger on me, with that heart of stone of yours!

— N’importe quoi !

Rokia came running, panicked. A rich son-in-law, at last — no way three sentences would ruin everything.

— Kevin, my son, do not listen to him! He only wants to make you angry!

— Kevin, mon fils, ne l’écoute pas ! Il veut juste te mettre en colère !

— Auntie, do not worry. I do not believe him.

— Tantie, ne t’inquiète pas. Je ne le crois pas.

Kevin was no fool.

Kevin n’était pas idiot.

But the doubt had entered. And doubt never walks out on its own.

For one second — a single one — Aïcha's gaze met Malik's across the yard.

And in that second, the perfect emptiness cracked. Something passed. A plea, or a farewell, or a warning — something that looked like anything except love for Kevin.

Then Aïcha looked away, and the mask returned.

Malik ignored them and went on his way.

Malik les ignora et passa son chemin.

— Wait!

— Attends !

Kevin’s voice cracked behind him.

— Keep your mouth away from my wife. Or you will regret it.

— Tiens ta bouche loin de ma femme. Sinon tu le regretteras.

Malik turned around slowly.

Malik se retourna lentement.

— I have a mouth. I say what I want. You, be careful not to lose your life one day without even knowing why.

Kevin sank into that gaze — and for one second, something inside him recoiled. A nameless fear, cold, absurd.

He caught himself immediately, mad with shame.

Il se reprit aussitôt, fou de honte.

— Say that again! If you are not afraid to die, try me! But do not come begging on your knees afterwards!

— We will see who kneels before whom.

— On verra bien qui s’agenouillera devant qui.

— Kevin, leave that poor fool, he is mad!

Rokia pulled him by the sleeve, and the procession poured into the yard.

Malik watched Kevin’s silhouette move away.

Then he snapped his fingers.

Alors il claqua des doigts.

A single snap, dry, almost absent-minded.

Un simple claquement, sec, presque distrait.

On his finger, the old bronze ring turned warm. The open circle crossed by three lines — the Mark of the Ancients — seemed for an instant to drink the daylight.

Old Balla had never taught him that gesture. It had come on its own, like a word in a language you discover you can speak.

Something invisible crossed the air — and Kevin shivered from head to toe, without understanding. He shrugged and went inside.

— I would like to see that, Malik murmured. All of you. On your knees.

— J’aimerais bien voir ça, murmura Malik. Vous tous. À genoux.

A cold smile crossed his face. Then he turned on his heel and headed for the N’Kora Palace.

Outside the entrance of the Palace, there was a stir.

Devant l’entrée du Palace, c’était l’émoi.

Elhadj Sylla himself stood on the front steps, waiting.

The guests walking in could not believe their eyes.

— Is that really Elhadj Sylla, there? Outside? At the door?

— C’est bien Elhadj Sylla, là ? Dehors ? À la porte ?

— He seems to be waiting for someone…

— On dirait qu’il attend quelqu’un…

— The son of the great family is getting married here today. Maybe he is waiting for someone from the wedding?

— Certainly. A family like that commands respect.

— Certainement. Une famille pareille, ça se respecte.

The crowd went in, chattering.

La foule entra en bavardant.

Elhadj Sylla stayed on the steps. From time to time he glanced at his watch, and a shadow of impatience crossed his face.

A porter in livery came out to offer him a private lounge, an armchair, a refreshment. Elhadj Sylla waved him away.

From the great hall upstairs, the wedding music and the laughter of Kevin's family were already drifting down.

The old man did not spare them a glance.

He watched the street.

Il fixait la rue.

One question ran from mouth to mouth, finding no answer:

who, in all of N’Kora City, could afford to keep Elhadj Sylla waiting?
