Le prix de la nuit
La renommée de la lampe dépassa bientôt la lagune.
The lamp's fame soon travelled past the lagoon.
Un soir, un 4x4 s’arrêta devant la case. Il en descendit un grand commerçant de la ville, parfumé, pressé, avec des mains qui n’avaient jamais rien porté.
One evening, a 4x4 stopped in front of the house. Out stepped a big merchant from the city, perfumed, hurried, with hands that had never carried anything.
« On m’a parlé de ta lampe, dit-il. Je t’en donne le prix de dix cases. Avec la tôle neuve. »
"I have been told about your lamp," he said. "I will give you the price of ten houses for it. New roofing sheets included."
« Elle n’est pas à vendre. »
"It is not for sale."
« Tout est à vendre. C’est mon métier de le savoir. »
"Everything is for sale. Knowing that is my trade."
Awa posa la navette et le regarda tranquillement.
Awa set down her shuttle and looked at him calmly.
« Elle ne m’appartient pas. Elle est ici, c’est tout. On ne vend pas un étranger qu’on héberge. »
"It does not belong to me. It is here, that is all. One does not sell a stranger one is hosting."
Le commerçant sourit, salua trop bas, et remonta dans son 4x4.
The merchant smiled, bowed too low, and climbed back into his 4x4.
Cette nuit-là, le vent secoua les manguiers, et les chiens du village aboyèrent une seule fois — une seule.
That night, the wind shook the mango trees, and the village dogs barked once — only once.
Au matin, le banc était vide.
In the morning, the bench was bare.
La lampe avait disparu.
The lamp was gone.
À sa place, bien alignée sous une pierre, une épaisse liasse de billets.
In its place, squared neatly under a stone, a thick wad of banknotes.
Le voleur avait payé.
The thief had paid.
Awa regarda longtemps l’argent sans le toucher. Puis elle s’assit à son métier, comme tous les matins, et se remit à tisser.
Awa looked at the money for a long time without touching it. Then she sat down at her loom, as she did every morning, and went back to weaving.
Les voisins accoururent, s’indignèrent, jurèrent, proposèrent d’aller voir les gendarmes, le chef, le pasteur.
The neighbours came running, protested, swore, offered to fetch the gendarmes, the chief, the pastor.
« Il faut faire quelque chose ! »
"Something must be done!"
« Je fais quelque chose, dit Awa sans lever les yeux. Je tisse. »
"I am doing something," said Awa without looking up. "I am weaving."
« Mais la lampe ! »
"But the lamp!"
« Elle a une loi, dit Awa. Vous l’avez tous vue. Elle s’éteint devant le mensonge, elle attend la vérité. »
"It has a law," said Awa. "You have all seen it. It goes out before a lie, and it waits for the truth."
Elle noua un fil, le trancha d’un coup d’ongle.
She knotted a thread and cut it with her nail.
« Un homme qui vole une lampe pareille l’emporte dans une maison pleine de mensonges. Je ne voudrais pas dormir chez lui. »
"A man who steals such a lamp carries it into a house full of lies. I would not want to sleep in his house."
Le soir même, à la ville, le commerçant posait la lampe de cuivre au milieu de son grand salon climatisé, entre les tapis et les trophées.
That very evening, in the city, the merchant set the copper lamp in the middle of his big air-conditioned sitting room, among the carpets and the trophies.
Il craqua une allumette, la tint contre la mèche.
He struck a match and held it to the wick.
La flamme prit, trembla, le regarda presque —
The flame caught, trembled, seemed almost to look at him —
et s’éteignit.
and went out.
