La Grande Place
À l’aube, les tambours réveillèrent Kandara.
At dawn, the drums woke Kandara.
Pas un tambour. Pas dix. Tous.
Not one drum. Not ten. All of them.
Des toits de la ville basse aux collines des grandes familles, le même battement roulait de cour en cour : c’était le jour de la Grande Fête des Masques, la plus grande fête de l’année.
From the rooftops of the lower town to the hills of the great families, the same beat rolled from courtyard to courtyard: it was the day of the Great Festival of Masks, the biggest feast of the year.
Et toute la cité marchait vers le même endroit : la Maison des Ancêtres.
And the whole city was walking toward the same place: the House of the Ancestors.
C’était le plus vaste bâtiment de Kandara — une salle immense aux piliers sculptés, où des générations avaient dansé, jugé, couronné. Ce matin-là, elle parut soudain trop petite.
It was the largest building in Kandara — an immense hall with carved pillars, where generations had danced, judged and crowned. That morning, it suddenly seemed too small.
On s’y écrasait par milliers. Les enfants grimpaient sur les épaules des pères. Les jeunes gens s’installaient sur les socles des statues. Les retardataires se pendaient aux fenêtres pour apercevoir quelque chose — n’importe quoi.
Thousands were crushed inside. Children climbed onto their fathers' shoulders. Young men perched on the bases of the statues. Latecomers hung from the windows to glimpse something — anything.
Au fond de la salle, une estrade attendait.
At the far end of the hall, a stage was waiting.
Et près de cette estrade, un jeune homme en boubou soigneusement repassé mais élimé aux manches serrait contre lui une sacoche pleine de feuilles.
And near that stage, a young man in a carefully ironed but threadbare boubou clutched a satchel full of pages.
Il s’appelait Madi.
His name was Madi.
Conteur. Auteur. Inconnu.
Storyteller. Author. Unknown.
Ce qu’on allait présenter sur cette estrade, c’était son histoire. Des mois de travail, des nuits entières, et tout ce qui lui restait d’espoir d’une vie meilleure.
What was to be presented on that stage was his story. Months of work, whole nights, and everything that remained of his hope for a better life.
— Aujourd’hui, murmura-t-il, Kandara va enfin entendre mon histoire.
— Today, he murmured, Kandara will finally hear my story.
Mais Kandara, pour l’instant, n’écoutait rien.
But Kandara, for the moment, was listening to nothing.
La foule s’amusait de tout : d’un chapeau ridicule, d’un marchand bousculé, d’un élève de l’école coranique qui lançait des moqueries du haut d’un pilier. Chaque minute d’attente rendait la salle plus bruyante, plus moqueuse.
The crowd found fun in everything: a ridiculous hat, a jostled merchant, a student hurling jokes from the top of a pillar. Every minute of waiting made the hall louder, more mocking.
Car on attendait aussi de grands invités.
Because great guests were expected too.
Le Grand Conseiller, disait-on. Et une délégation venue d’une autre grande cité, pour parler d’alliances. Des gens importants.
The High Counselor, people said. And a delegation from another great city, come to speak of alliances. Important people.
Des gens en retard.
Late people.
— L’histoire ! criaient les uns.
— The story! shouted some.
— Les tambours ! criaient les autres.
— The drums! shouted others.
— Les masques ! hurlaient les derniers.
— The masks! howled the rest.
Madi regardait cette marée humaine et sentait son cœur se serrer.
Madi watched that human tide and felt his heart tighten.
Il avait imaginé un public suspendu à ses mots.
He had imagined an audience hanging on his words.
Il découvrait une tempête.
He was discovering a storm.
Le soleil monta. Rien n’avait commencé, et la salle grondait.
The sun climbed. Nothing had begun, and the hall was growling.
Alors Madi prit la plus grande décision de sa journée.
So Madi made the greatest decision of his day.
Tant pis pour les dignitaires.
Too bad for the dignitaries.
Le spectacle allait commencer.
The show was about to begin.
Il ne le savait pas encore, mais derrière les grandes portes de la Maison des Ancêtres, un destin inconnu attendait déjà.
He did not know it yet, but behind the great doors of the House of the Ancestors, an unknown destiny was already waiting.
